Somaliland and Taiwan deepen trade ties with new Hargeisa office
A joint investment desk aims to route more electronics, fisheries and agri-tech deals through Berbera.
Hargeisa — Somaliland and Taiwan opened a joint trade and investment desk in the capital this week, formalising six years of quiet cooperation that has already produced medical training, ICT scholarships and small-scale manufacturing pilots.
The office will help match Taiwanese firms to Somaliland exporters in fisheries, frankincense and light electronics, with paperwork routed through Berbera's free zone. Officials say a second desk in Taipei is planned before year-end.
The move is diplomatically delicate — neither government is widely recognised in its current form — but both sides framed the office as a commercial arrangement rather than a political one.
