Ethiopia is one of humanity's oldest states, with roots in the Aksumite empire (1st-7th century CE), the Zagwe dynasty of Lalibela, and the Solomonic emperors that ruled until 1974. Uniquely in Africa it defeated European colonisation at Adwa in 1896. Emperor Haile Selassie helped found the OAU (now AU) in Addis Ababa in 1963. The 1974 Derg revolution ended the monarchy; the EPRDF took power in 1991, ushering in ethnic federalism. Since 2018 PM Abiy Ahmed's reforms have been shadowed by the 2020-22 Tigray war.
